Veldskoen are made from natural leather — typically raw-hide or vegetable-tanned hides from South African cattle. That's what makes them age beautifully, but it also means they need the right care. Wrong products can darken, stiffen, or damage the leather permanently.
The good news: cleaning vellies is simple when you use the right products in the right order. This guide covers smooth leather veldskoen, suede veldskoen, and everything in between.
Most Tsonga and Veldskoen vellies are smooth leather — tan, brown, or black. Some styles use suede or nubuck (soft, velvety surface). Smooth leather and suede need different products. Never use smooth leather cream on suede — it will permanently clog the fibres.
Cleaning smooth leather veldskoen — step by step
This method works for 90% of veldskoen — the classic tan, honey, dark brown, and black smooth-leather styles.
- 1Remove the laces and dry-brush first
Pull the laces out and use a dry brush to knock off loose mud and dust before adding any liquid. Dry dirt scrubs off easily — wet dirt can smear into the leather.
- 2Apply Shoe Cleaner
Spray Spotless Shoe Cleaner directly onto the shoe (2–3 pumps) or onto a damp brush. Work in using gentle circular motions. No need to scrub hard — the formula lifts the dirt for you.
- 3Wipe clean with a damp cloth
Use a damp microfibre cloth to wipe the surface clean. For stubborn marks, repeat with another application of Shoe Cleaner and let it sit for 30 seconds before wiping.
- 4Air dry — never use heat
Leave your vellies to air dry in a cool, ventilated spot for at least 2 hours. Do not place near a heater, in direct sunlight, or use a hairdryer. Heat dries out natural leather and causes cracking.
- 5Condition with Hide Clean & Feed
Once fully dry, apply Spotless Hide Clean & Feed in small circular motions, covering the whole upper and paying attention to the toe box and flex creases. Allow 5–10 minutes to absorb, then buff gently with a dry cloth to a natural finish. This step keeps the leather supple and prevents cracking.
- 6Protect with The Resistor (recommended)
Apply 2 light coats of The Resistor from 20cm away, allowing 60 seconds between coats. This creates a breathable water-repellent barrier that keeps your vellies cleaner for longer and makes future cleaning much easier. Allow 12–24 hours to cure before wearing.
Cleaning suede veldskoen
Some veldskoen styles — particularly tan reverse-suede vellies — have a soft, velvety surface. This is suede or nubuck, and it needs a different approach.
Leather cream, balm, or Hide Clean & Feed will permanently clog suede fibres and cause irreversible damage. For suede veldskoen, use Shoe Cleaner and Suede & Nubuck Care only.
- 1Dry brush in one direction
Always brush suede in one direction — not in circles. This prevents matting and keeps the nap even.
- 2Apply Shoe Cleaner with a damp brush
Dampen a soft bristle brush, spray Shoe Cleaner onto the brush, then work gently across the suede surface — in one direction only.
- 3Wipe and air dry fully
Wipe lightly with a damp cloth and allow to air dry completely — 2–4 hours. Never apply heat.
- 4Apply Suede & Nubuck Care
Once dry, apply Suede & Nubuck Care from 15cm away in light, even passes. Allow to absorb, then gently brush the nap to raise it.
- 5Finish with The Resistor
Apply 2 light coats of The Resistor. Suede is particularly vulnerable to water damage — protection is essential.
Common questions
Saddle soap works on heavy saddlery leather but is too alkaline for the finer leathers used in veldskoen footwear. It can strip natural oils and dry out the leather over time. Shoe Cleaner is pH-balanced and biodegradable — a much safer choice for regular cleaning.
Clean first, then apply Leather Balm (for very dry or stiff leather) or Hide Clean & Feed for regular softening. Work the product into the leather and allow overnight before wearing. Avoid wetting leather to soften it — this weakens the fibres.
Clean every 4–6 weeks for regular wear, or after any session in wet or muddy conditions. Condition every 6–8 weeks. Apply The Resistor every 3 months for light wear or every 4–6 weeks for outdoor or heavy use.
No — Shoe Cleaner is colour-safe and will not alter or strip the natural tone of your leather. It may temporarily darken wet leather slightly during application, but this normalises as it dries.
